Train cars derail in Carbon; tracks, crossing extensively damaged; road to be closed for “lengthy period of time”

NESQUEHONING, Carbon County – Several train cars derailed in the borough of Nesquehoning, Carbon County Sunday afternoon.
The derailment occurred around 4:00pm at Mermon Avenue, the main North-South thoroughfare in town, and Elm Street near Panther Valley Elementary School.
Photos and videos circulating social media and submitted to the Sentinel show box cars and hoppers off the tracks with extensive damage to both the cars and infrastructure surrounding. Tracks and parts of the crossing at Mermon were extensively damaged, according to the photos.
No injuries have been reported thus far, and firefighters from Carbon and Schuylkill Counties are at the scene.
The tracks are owned by the Carbon County Railroad Commission and operated by the Reading Blue Mountain and Northern Railroad. The train was said to be a freight train run by the Reading and Northern.
The Nesquehoning Fire Company asked residents to avoid the area as the road would be closed for an extended period of time, they said.
