Tornado reported in Mahanoy City area

MAHANOY CITY – A tornado reportedly swept through the Mahanoy Valley Monday evening, prompting a shelter in place order by borough police.

The National Weather Service at State College reported a confirmed tornado near Mahanoy City around 8pm, spotted by emergency management.

Video provided to the Sentinel showed a funnel cloud with debris swirling.

The tornado warning was allowed to expire.

Damage was reported across the west end of town.

The Red Cross has opened a warming shelter at the Citizens Fire Company on West Centre Street for anyone who may need assistance
