Three taken to hospital after Mahanoy City crash

MAHANOY CITY – Three people were taken to a local hospital after their crossover was struck by a pickup truck on West Centre Street in Mahanoy City Wednesday afternoon.
The crash occurred around 3:00pm, when police at the scene said a Honda CR-V, travelling west on Centre Street, was stopped for the red light at Centre and Catawissa. A white Ram pickup struck the CR-V, pushing the vehicle roughly 150 feet, and leaving a trail of debris along the way.
“The people in the car were stopped at the traffic light, and apparently the gentleman in the back did not realize it was a red light and drove into the back of them,” said Mahanoy City Police Chief Mark Wiekrykas. “It actually propelled them at least half a block.”
Wiekrykas added that the three occupants of the CR-V were taken to a local hospital, and the driver of the pickup was uninjured. The crash remains under investigation, he said.
Fire crews from Mahanoy City’s Humane and West End companies responded to the scene, along with borough police, Mahanoy City EMS, and Shenandoah Ambulance.
The two vehicles were removed by Steve’s Towing, and the road reopened to traffic by 3:40pm.
