Three displaced, no injuries in South Bower blaze

KAYLEE LINDENMUTH / SHENANDOAH SENTINEL - Flames are seen enveloping the rear of a set of row homes on South Bower Street in Shenandoah on Oct. 14, 2024.

SHENANDOAH – Three people are displaced after flames ripped through a South Bower Street row home and damaged two others late Monday night.

Flames broke out in a home at 5 South Bower Street around 10pm.

Shenandoah Fire Chief Rick Examitas said the department was originally called for a chimney fire and found heavy smoke showing from the row home.

Flames enveloped the second floor of the rear of the home and spread to 7 South Bower.

A second alarm was struck for manpower, Examitas said, drawing crews from Girardville, Pottsville, Ringtown, Shenandoah Heights, Mahanoy City, and more to assist the Shenandoah Fire Department.

No injuries were reported and damage was contained to 5 South Bower Street and the adjoining buildings on either side: 7 South Bower and 200 East Centre.

“Everybody did a great job,” Examitas said of the firefight.

A State Police fire marshal is investigating, Examitas said.

He said the American Red Cross was not requested as the displaced residents — three of them — all had places to stay.

Several cats were seen being taken from the home by first responders, though Examitas did not know the specifics on how many or their conditions as of midnight.
