Threat leads to evacuation of North’d Walmart

KAYLEE LINDENMUTH / SHENANDOAH SENTINEL - A K-9 and their handler, accompanied by Coal Township Police and a Walmart associate, enter the store on Route 61 near Kulpmont.
COAL TWP., Northumberland County – A K-9 unit was brought in to sweep the Walmart store between Kulpmont and Shamokin Friday, after a threat led to the store’s evacuation.
Police from Coal Township, Kulpmont, and Mount Carmel Township responded to the store on Route 61 around 3:30pm.
A threat was received by phone, leading to the store’s evacuation as a precaution.

Store employees gathered on the far end of the parking lot while police awaited the arrival of a K-9 unit.
Firefighters from the Coal Township area were also placed on a stand-by in quarters assignment, with the exception of Coal Township’s Brady Fire Co., which responded to the scene for traffic control. They were assisted by Shamokin Fire Police.

A K-9 unit from Geisinger Health’s security division arrived and searched both the supercenter and gas station.
Around 5:17pm, the search was complete and store employees were allowed back inside.
Until then, they found creative ways to pass the time.

Some tossed around a tennis ball or football, while others organized foot races through the parking lot.
All emergency personnel were clear of the scene by 5:30pm.
