Thousands of minks on loose north of Trevorton
AUGUSTAVILLE – Several thousand minks were set free in Northumberland County over the weekend and many remain on the loose.
State Police at Stonington said the weasel-like mammals were set free sometime Sunday morning at a farm on Route 890 in Rockefeller Township, between Sunbury and Trevorton.
Someone cut holes in the fence surrounding the farm and released between 6,000 and 8,000 minks from their pens.
The Pennsylvania Game Commission says live minks can be dangerous and can bite.
“Please do not approach or attempt to catch these animals without a safe and proper trap,” the game commission said.
Anyone who sees a live mink in the Sunbury area should call 570-988-4217 to report its wherabouts.
Dead minks should be reported to the game commission by calling 1-833-PGC-WILD (1-833-742-9453).
If a resident traps a live mink, they can take it to the Sunbury Animal Hospital, 3920 Route 890.
