SV approves staffer retirements, totaling 135 years in education
SHENANDOAH – Five teachers, who have a combined 135 years of service in education, are retiring from the Shenandoah Valley School District at the end of this school year.
At Wednesday night’s regular board meeting, the school board approved letters of intent to retire from Judi Ashford, high school English; Coleen McGuire, high school special education; Erica Polley, speech and language therapist; Russell Schumack, high school physics, science, and chemistry; and Anne Taylor, junior high English.
Each teacher has decades of experience in education, with the lion’s share being in Shenandoah Valley schools.
“Although the year is not over, I would like to personally thank each educator for their dedication and devotion to the students in the Shenandoah Valley School District,” Waite said. “You will be missed. We wish you the best in your future endeavors.”
Ashford and Taylor have both taught in Shenandoah Valley schools for nearly 35 years each. At that time, the J.W. Cooper building was still in use as an elementary center. Both have also helped lead extracurricular activities, including drama club and yearbook.
Polley has also been in education for 35 years, though she is a relatively recent addition to Shenandoah Valley’s staff.
McGuire has 22 years experience in education in Pennsylvania, 20 at Shenandoah, and previously worked in advertising and social services. She has also been the district’s alternative education coordinator for nearly two decades.
Schumack, Shenandoah’s former fire chief, has 14 years in education, with decades more experience as an engineer.
The district retroactively approved posting and advertising the positions.
