STS leaves riders in the cold, blames water main break
SHENANDOAH – West end residents who rely on the Schuylkill Transportation System traded their Boyer’s bus shelter Wednesday for a bitter cold walk downtown as STS blamed a water main break.
The three transit bus routes that service Shenandoah — #10 Pottsville, #51 Mahanoy City, and #52 Ashland — all stop at the Boyer’s Food Markets location on West Centre Street.
That stop is the only sheltered bus stop in Shenandoah, thanks to the market’s vestibule and entrance canopy.
Service to the Boyer’s stop, plus the request stop at Gilbert Street, was cancelled Wednesday due to a water main break on West Centre.
The hub stop on West Centre at M&T Bank and the Lyric Restaurant temporarily moved to Main Street outside the former Santander Bank.
The water main break did not impact traffic along West Coal and West Oak Street, both of which previously handled school buses daily.
Riders who would typically pick up the bus at Boyer’s instead had to walk downtown, along snowy sidewalks with temperatures in the mid-teens.
According to STS’ ridership survey conducted in 2021, the vast majority of STS riders are 65 or above (64%).
