Southern Columbia bus rolls with 32 on-board; nine transported

PARRS MILL – Nine students were taken to area hospitals after a Southern Columbia school bus rolled Thursday afternoon.

The crash happened around 3pm Thursday on Southern Drive near Ashton Hollow Road in Franklin Township, around a mile east of the school campus.

The Southern Columbia School District said the bus was carrying 32 students along with the bus driver when the crash happened.

“All students and the driver were immediately assessed on the scene and were transported or released as appropriate per the responding agencies,” Southern said in a statement. “The district immediately notified all families of affected students.”

“We understand that news like this is unsettling, and we are committed to keeping our families informed,” the district added. “Counselors and mental health staff will be available at school tomorrow, and in the coming days, for all students and staff who may need additional support.”

According to the Catawissa Fire Co., nine people were taken to area hospitals with the remaining students being released to their parents and guardians.

Locust Township Police are investigating.

“We deeply appreciate the quick response of first responders, our staff, and the cooperation of our families and Southern Columbia school community during this time,” Southern Columbia Schools said in a statement.
