South Tamaqua gas station briefly has cheapest gas in region to send political message

SOUTH TAMAQUA – While gas prices across Schuylkill County have yet to drop below $3/gal, one station in West Penn Township briefly became the cheapest place to fill up in eastern Pennsylvania, all to send a political message.
For a few hours Friday morning, the Pantry Quik off Route 309 in South Tamaqua priced regular at $2.38.
That is the price Americans for Prosperity and the Republican lawmakers in attendance say was the average price when President Joe Biden took office in 2021, ten months into the coronavirus pandemic.
The price was slightly under the monthly national average throughout the Trump presidency of $2.48 and up from a low of $1.84 in April 2020, a month after pandemic restrictions began.
U.S. Rep. Dan Meuser (R-9th), who represents Schuylkill County and is up for re-election this year, said he, along with Americans for Prosperity, is “committed to supporting policies that drive economic growth.”
State Senator Dave Argall, State Rep. Jamie Barton, County Commissioner Larry Padora, and Tamaqua Mayor Nathan Gerace, all Republicans, were all in attendance as well.
Gas prices in northern Schuylkill County are generally around $3.15 as of Monday afternoon, with a low of $3.05 in Lavelle according to GasBuddy.
Sub-$3 gas is available at the Walmart near Kulpmont and at the Citgo at Route 93 and Tomhicken Road near Hazleton.
