South county robbery suspect denied bail

WAYNE TWP. – A Cressona man has been charged for reckless endangerment and fleeing police, State Police at Schuylkill Haven said late Thursday.

Troopers said, around 1:00pm Tuesday, they tried to stop John Bennett, 32, of Cressona as his 1993 Mercedes Benz matched the suspected vehicle in several armed robberies in southern Schuylkill and northern Berks County, in Cressona, Pine Grove Township, West Brunswick Township, and Upper Tulpehocken Township.

Bennett fled, leading police on a pursuit before he ultimately crashed into an unmarked Ford Police Interceptor Sedan from the PSP-Schuylkill Haven barracks. The crash happened on Panther Valley Road in the area of Beckville Road, troopers said.

Bennett then fled on foot and was taken into custody.

Charges for Felony Eluding, four misdemeanor counts of Reckless Endangerment, and traffic offenses were filed against Bennett.

Bennett was committed to Schuylkill County Prison, and was denied bail, accused of being a flight risk.
