Smoke conditions draw firefighters to mall, adult probation office

KAYLEE LINDENMUTH / SHENANDOAH SENTINEL - A Schuylkill Haven firefighter dumps lint onto the sidewalk outside a laundromat at the Cressona Mall on Tuesday, April 27, 2021.
POTTSVILLE – Firefighters in the south-central portion of the county handled two smoke condition-prompted calls within half an hour of each other Tuesday afternoon
Schuylkill Haven firefighters were called to the Dollar General at the Cressona Mall around 1:30pm after a smoke condition was observed.
Firefighters arrived to investigate and found the cause was in the laundromat next door — lint caught fire.

Large piles of dryer lint was brought out and doused with water cans.
Crews were clear of that scene within about 45 minutes.
Around 2:00pm, Pottsville’s Bureau of Fire responded to the Schuylkill County Adult Probation building on North Third Street for a reported commercial structure fire, also dispatching units from Schuylkill Haven, Mahanoy City, Saint Clair, and Minersville.

City Fire Chief Jim Misstishin said the cause was the HVAC system at the building, in which a malfunction caused a smoke condition throughout the building.
No actual fire was reported, and crews were clear within ten minutes.
