ShenSentinel brings six Keystone Media Awards home from Harrisburg

SWATARA TOWNSHIP, Dauphin County – The Shenandoah Sentinel was one of dozens of news organizations recognized for journalistic excellence Thursday at the Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association’s Keystone Media Awards, returning to northern Schuylkill County with six awards.
The Sentinel was the most-awarded news outlet in Schuylkill County in this year’s contest, judged by the Hoosier State Press Association from Indiana.
Kaylee Lindenmuth, publisher/editor/multimedia journalist, and Micquelynn Kapuschinsky, freelance multimedia journalist, attended the contest to accept the awards. This year marked the first time the Sentinel‘s full team was recognized at the contest and the fourth consecutive year the Sentinel has entered and won an award.
The Sentinel competes in Division IV, for Pennsylvania’s smallest multi-day publications. Lindenmuth was the second-most awarded individual journalist in Division IV.
Other newspapers in Division IV include The York Dispatch, Centre Daily Times, Hanover Evening Sun, Meadville Tribune, Lebanon Daily News, and Pocono Record.
Award wins for the Sentinel include:
- First Place, Headline Writing, for Kaylee Lindenmuth’s following headlines:
- First Place, Graphic/Photo Illustration, for Kaylee Lindenmuth’s graphic recognizing Shenandoah Valley Boys’ Soccer’s 2024 Schuylkill League Division II championship;
- First Place, Sports Video, for Kaylee Lindenmuth’s football highlight video from the 2024 Shenandoah – Mahanoy football game;
- Second Place, Breaking News Coverage, for the Sentinel‘s team coverage of the May 2024 tornado in Mahanoy City, including:
- Social media posts on Sentinel platforms and on the Sentinel website as the situation unfolded;
- Team coverage the night of with photos from Micquelynn Kapuschinsky, Sherry Streeter, and reader submissions;
- A breakout story by Kaylee Lindenmuth exploring previous tornadoes in the region;
- Initial reports from the storm survey the next day as the Sentinel was the ONLY Schuylkill County-based news source attending;
- Honorable Mention, Feature Photo, for Kaylee Lindenmuth’s photo of combine harvester working a Pattersonville field in October.
- Honorable Mention, Sports Video, for Kaylee Lindenmuth’s interview with Shenandoah Valley Head Football Coach Dave Bench previewing the 2024 season.
