SHENANDOAH – Shenandoah began 2020 with three banks at its principal intersection, but it will likely end the year with two, after Santander notified its customers the local branch will be closing.
According to a letter received by the Sentinel dated January 10, signed by Jonathan Leyden, District Executive for the bank’s Pennsylvania – New Jersey Central Region, the branch will close at noon on Friday, April 17. The branch, according to the letter, will consolidate with their Pottsville branch at 120 South Centre Street, about 12 miles away.
“Dear Valued Customer, we’re writing to let you know that at noon on Friday, April 17, 2020, Santander will consolidate our Shenandoah Branch at 2 North Main Street… into our Pottsville branch,” Leyden writes in the letter. “On Saturday, April 18, 2020, the Pottsville Branch will be your new branch.
The letter does not provide a reason why the branch will be consolidated, and adds that customers will not need to take action “unless you have a safe deposit box.” If so, customers will need to call the branch at 570-462-2742 to make arrangements to close the box no later than Tuesday, March 10, and a new safe deposit box at any Santander location will be offered at no cost for a year.
“Safe Deposit Boxes not closed by [March 10] will have to be drilled open and the contents inventoried,” the letter states. Such contents will be retained for safekeeping at the Pottsville branch.
The letter does not state whether or not the ATM at Centre and Ferguson will remain open.
According to FDIC data, the branch was originally established on August 15, 1917 as the Miners National Bank of Shenandoah. In Dec. 1986, it merged into the Miners National Bank of Pottsville, before becoming Heritage National Bank in 1995.
In 1999, the bank merged into Reading-based Main Street Bank, then in 2002 into Wyomissing-based Sovereign Bank. In 2013, the bank became Santander.
