Shenandoah Santander permanently closes
SHENANDOAH – As of Friday afternoon, Shenandoah is down to three bank branches, as Santander officially closed its doors.
Logos on the bank building at 2 North Main Street and on the ATM at West Centre and North Ferguson were blacked out Monday afternoon, and directions to the Pottsville branch were taped over the night deposit box.
Bank officials notified customers in January of the closure, a story the Sentinel first broke on January 13.
““Dear Valued Customer, we’re writing to let you know that at noon on Friday, April 17, 2020, Santander will consolidate our Shenandoah Branch at 2 North Main Street… into our Pottsville branch,” Jonathan Leyden, District Executive for the bank’s Pennsylvania – New Jersey Central Region, wrote in a letter to customers. “On Saturday, April 18, 2020, the Pottsville Branch will be your new branch.”
The letter did not provide a reason why the Shenandoah branch would be consolidated.
In addition to closing the bank branch, the ATM at Centre and Ferguson closed as well. Now, the nearest Santander ATMs are at CVS in Pottsville and Mount Carmel. Branches remain in Pottsville and Tamaqua.
According to FDIC data, the branch was originally established on August 15, 1917 as the Miners National Bank of Shenandoah. In Dec. 1986, it merged into the Miners National Bank of Pottsville, before becoming Heritage National Bank in 1995.
In 1999, the bank merged into Reading-based Main Street Bank, then in 2002 into Wyomissing-based Sovereign Bank. In 2013, the bank became Santander.
