Shen. Valley, Mahanoy Area get grants for facility upgrades
SHENANDOAH – Two of our school districts are getting help from the state to improve their facilities as part of a new state grant program.
The grant awards were part of $175 Million awarded in the first round of the Public School Facility Improvement Grant Program.
That program was created in the 2023-24 budget.
Shenandoah Valley was awarded $800,000 for upgrades to the HVAC system and to install energy-saving lighting at the school district campus on West Centre Street in town.
Mahanoy Area also received a sizable grant: $600,000 to improve the elementary school HVAC system.
“These state grants are going toward building upgrades that will improve efficiency and lessen the burden on local property taxpayers,” State Rep. Dane Watro (R-116) said in a release. “I was pleased to work with Sen. Argall in bringing the funding home.”
“Our students deserve safe and healthy schools to learn in, and our teachers deserve modern and well-maintained classrooms to teach in, so when I took office, I worked to bring Democrats and Republicans together to invest in our kids and their future,” said Governor Josh Shapiro (D). “In just two years, we’ve secured $275 million to repair and upgrade our schools – and we’re driving that out to hundreds of district across the Commonwealth. Here in Pennsylvania, we’re working together to get stuff done and deliver real results for the people we serve.”
“As the chair of the Senate Education Committee, I understand how serious the need is for better school buildings,” said State Senator Dave Argall (R-29). “Outdated school facilities can put student safety in jeopardy and this highly competitive funding is much needed.”
