Shen. adds 32 cases since Thursday; majority from Manor

KAYLEE LINDENMUTH / SHENANDOAH SENTINEL - The Shenandoah Manor on Oct. 19, 2020.

SHENANDOAH – The Shenandoah 17976 ZIP Code added more coronavirus cases than any other in the region since Oct. 15, primarily because of a second wave hitting the Shenandoah Manor nursing home.

Pennsylvania Department of Health data showed that the Shenandoah 17976 ZIP Code added 32 cases between Oct. 15 and Oct. 19. The two Hazleton ZIP Codes – 18201 and 18202 – were the only others in the surrounding areas adding double-digit cases, at 24 and 14 respectively.

The majority of Shenandoah’s new cases stem from a second wave at the Shenandoah Manor.

Trent Flick, the Manor’s administrator, told the Sentinel that the facility currently has 30 active resident cases and 10 staff cases.

“We had COVID four months ago, we went four months without COVID, so now we’re experiencing it again,” Flick said. “We did our testing last week, Thursday and Friday, and we started getting our results back in Saturday.”

“We’re doing the best we can. Just about all of our residents are doing well. Very little, if any, symptoms at all,” Flick said, adding that the same goes for staff.

Elsewhere in the area, new cases remain relatively low. The Frackville ZIP Code has added eight cases since Oct. 15, while the Pottsville, Bloomsburg, and Tamaqua ZIP Codes have added seven in the same timeframe.

Northern Schuylkill as a whole has added 51 new cases of the county’s 105 new cases since Oct. 15.
