Several transported after I-81 crash in Luzerne County

HAZLE TOWNSHIP, Luzerne County – Several people were transported to local hospitals after a crash in Interstate 81 in Luzerne County Wednesday morning.
According to State Police at Hazleton, the crash occurred around 10:30am near mile marker 141 in Hazle Township in the northbound lanes, involving a Chevy Tahoe and a commercial dump truck.
According to troopers, the Tahoe, which was towing a U-Haul trailer, rear-ended the Kenworth W900 dump truck, causing disabling damage to the SUV.
Five people in the Tahoe — a male operator, female passenger, and three minor children — were transported to local hospitals for treatment of injuries, as was the truck driver, James Gyle, 48, of Hunlock Creek. The identities of the Tahoe passengers have not yet been released.
The northbound lanes of 81 were closed for two hours and traffic was detoured through McAdoo and Kline Township at the time.
The crash remains under investigation, state police said.
Troopers from the Hazleton barracks were assisted at the scene by West Hazleton Police, McAdoo Fire, Hazle Township Fire, LVHN EMS, and Zenier’s Towing.
