Schuylkill girl receives highest 4-H honor

UNIVERSITY PARK – At the recent Pennsylvania 4-H State Leadership Conference, a Schuylkill County girl received the highest honor possible in the Pennsylvania 4-H program.

Alyssa Cook, of Pitman, received a Diamond Clover Award. She was one of 26 4-H members awarded statewide.

The program encourages 4-H members to explore new projects and activities to help them acquire seven leadership life skills: communicating; decision-making and problem-solving; getting along with others; learning to learn; managing; understanding self; and working in groups.

Cook’s award came through a program she devised entitled “Meet the Olympians.”

It was a color run to benefit Schuylkill County Special Olympics, coordinating with local officials, promoting the event through schools and social media, and leading volunteers to run the race.

The effort raised $600 to support more than 125 athletes and educated participants about Special Olympics and adaptive functions that allow all to enjoy physical activity to their ability.

Cook is the daughter of Daniel and Theresa Cook.
