Mahanoy Area receives $75k STEM grant

MAHANOY CITY – The Mahanoy Area School District will receive a $75,000 grant to support computer science and STEM education, Rep. Dane Watro (R-Schuylkill/Luzerne) and Sen. Dave Argall (R-29) announced Thursday.

“This highly competitive funding will help teach our students career-defining skills and connect them with in-demand jobs in our area,” Argall said. “I’m committed to supporting and expanding career and technical education programs across Pennsylvania.”

The funding is coming through the state Department of Education’s PAsmart program, Watro said.

““These grants will support the development and expansion of Career and Technical Education (CTE) in STEM and computer science in our communities to ensure our students are prepared with the skills they’ll need to succeed in the future,” Watro added.

PAsmart is an initiative with the goal to expand inclusion in STEM and computer science teaching and learning, to help ensure students across Pennsylvania have the skills to meet the economic needs of the dynamic Pennsylvania economy. Since 2018, more than $60 million has been secured and strategically invested in education and workforce development through the initiative.

Hazleton students support charity event

DRUMS – The Drums Lioness Lions Club proudly hosted its first-ever “Run for the Roses Afternoon Tea,” a charity event that brought together 202 attendees for an afternoon of community, creativity, and compassion.

The event was considered a resounding success, thanks in large part to the remarkable participation and support from the Hazleton Area School District.

Many guests were Hazleton Area School District employees and several students contributed their time and talents to the event.

Students from the high school and Academy of Sciences helped with setup, clean-up, and welcoming guests; career center students built a strolling table for the event, and students also created a mural for the event.

“This event truly showcased the talent, teamwork, and spirit of our students,” said Superintendent Dr. Brian Uplinger “We are so proud of their contributions and grateful to The Drums Lioness Lions Club who for including our students in this wonderful event.”
