BARNESVILLE – Ryan Township Supervisors approved an increase to the trash collection fee and amendments to the nuisance ordinance which, they say, will add more teeth to the law.

Township trash bills will be going up by $20 a year in response to increases from the garbage collector, Thomas Enterprises, and the North Schuylkill Transfer Station, following Monday’s 3-0 vote.

Residents’ bills will increase from $200 to $220.

“That’s to cover costs,” Supervisors Vice-Chair Clyde “Champ” Holman said. “If you do the math, we’re breaking even. And that’s if everybody pays.”

Holman added that delinquents create a deficit for the township. Supervisor Lori Feldish-Ludinsky said there are multiple delinquents who are behind multiple years, and supervisors will discuss steps to take action next month.

Thomas Enterprises increased the per month fee to the township by $700, and the tipping fee at the transfer station increased by $20 from $68 to $88 per ton.

In other business, supervisors approved amendments to the nuisance ordinance.

Solicitor Christopher Riedlinger said the amendments stiffen the potential penalties under the ordinance.

“It had a bit of an outdated set of fines and costs before,” Riedlinger said. “There will now be an option of jailtime as well as a fine.”

Riedlinger added that the ordinance will not longer require service by certified mail, and it expands the amount of people who can be cited.

“Not just an owner or a lessee but anyone in actual control of the property,” Riedlinger said.

In other business, supervisors:

  • Approved multiple subdivision annexation plans
  • Approved an $18/hr salary for Edward Blazis, maintenance
  • Approved a planned enduro race to be hosted by High Mountain Dirt Riders in the township.
