Ruling on Shenandoah police-involved shooting expected soon
SHENANDOAH – We should soon know whether or not borough police were justified in shooting who police called an apparent burglar on West Coal Street late last year.
District Attorney Mike O’Pake said Monday that he is in possession of the incident report drafted by the State Police, who investigated the Dec. 11 shooting.
He said that he is still reviewing the report and hopes to have a ruling issued this month.
State Police at Frackville said, around 12:30am that day, Shenandoah and Mahanoy City Police were called to a home at 309 West Coal Street for a burglary in progress.
Police cleared the residence and found a man, identified as 32-year-old Byron Scheuring, of Shenandoah, under a bed upstairs.
They said he was given multiple commands to surrender and refused.
When officers began moving the bed he was under, Scheuring lunged at them while holding what they described as a machete.
A Shenandoah police officer fired a single shot, striking Scheuring, according to State Police at the time.
