Road work planned atop Vulcan Hill for Mahanoy Business Park
VULCAN – A road work project is set to begin next week that will rework an area of Route 54 from the I-81 ramp east to accommodate the Mahanoy Business Park, which is under construction.
Electronic message boards were posted at the bottom of the Vulcan Hill on both the Mahanoy City and Barnesville sides, alerting drivers that work will begin on August 4.
PennDOT District Press Officer Ron Young says the work is part of a highway occupancy permit issued to NorthPoint Development.
The Kansas City-based company is building multiple warehouses between Route 54 and the Burma Road, including on the former Bendinsky Airport property, and the road work, PennDOT says, is to mitigate traffic impacts from those developments.
Young said Northpoint will be relocating the I-81 North off-ramp and will be making island and median revisions.
He added that they will also widen Route 54 on the eastbound side from the offramp for about 2,100 feet. That will include extending the centerline median and second eastbound lane for about 1,000 feet and adding a driveway entrance into the park with a traffic signal.
At that signal, there will be a right turn deceleration lane and a left turn lane into the driveway.
Highway lighting will also be added along that right turn lane.
