Rivals battle off-the-field for a good cause
KAYLEE LINDENMUTH / SHENANDOAH SENTINEL - Shenandoah Valley's #2 Ben Dempster bats the ball out of the hands of Mahanoy Area's #17 Levi Terry.
SHENANDOAH – For the second year, a fierce football rivalry is being channeled into a good cause off the field.
Shenandoah Valley and Mahanoy Area will compete in a food drive competition once again this year, ahead of the annual rivalry football game on Oct. 24.
Both schools are seeking non-perishable food items and monetary donations for food pantries serving Shenandoah and Mahanoy City.
What’s at stake? The principal of the losing school will wear the winning school’s jersey.
Every $1 or food item is one point and Thanksgiving-related items — stuffing, yams, cranberry sauce, etc. — earns bonus points.
Donations can be brought to either the Shenandoah Valley High School and Elementary offices or to the game.
