Rivals add friendly competition to Damato-Szematowicz trophy game for good cause

SHENANDOAH – While Shenandoah and Mahanoy Area will square off on the gridiron Friday for the Damato-Szematowicz Trophy, there’s another contest off the field for a good cause.

The two schools will engage in a food drive competition at the game, set for 7pm Friday at Alumni Stadium in Mahanoy City.

Fans can bring nonperishable food items or monetary donations to the game, which will be collected by each school for local food pantries.

Each dollar or item is one point for the school

Bonus points for food items related to Thanksgiving — yams, stuffing, cranberry sauce, etc.

The losing school’s principal will wear the winning school’s jersey, so if you want to see Mr. Matthew Gianelli in Columbia Blue and White, or Mr. John Brennan in Black and Gold, bring as many sweet potatoes as you can find.
