Ringtown mill destroyed by overnight fire

RINGTOWN – An overnight blaze engulfed and destroyed the Ringtown Mill Wednesday morning, sending embers at least 50 feet into the air and emanating a glow visible miles away.
Firefighters were dispatched to the mill at 655 West Main Street just after 1:00am. Arriving crews found heavy fire coming through the roof of the structure, and the incident was quickly upgraded to a second alarm with a tanker task force.
Early in the firefight, flames rose high above the scene as the silo was engulfed.
The fire quickly spread throughout the rest of the building and firefighters engaged in a defensive strategy as a result.
Firefighters from Schuylkill, Luzerne, Columbia, and Northumberland Counties all converged on the scene to battle the blaze.
According to Ringtown Valley Fire Chief Joseph Gilbert, at the time the fire was brought under control, just before 4:00am, no injuries were reported.
Responding fire companies assisting Ringtown Valley included Shenandoah’s Columbia, Rescue Hook and Ladder, and Polish American, Nuremberg-Weston, Mahanoy City’s West End and Citizens, Numidia, New England from Walker Township, Mahantango from Pitman, Harwood, Hazle Township, Sheppton-Oneida, Frackville, Mount Carmel, Ashland, and more.
Also responding was Shenandoah Ambulance and Shenandoah Police.
Just after 4:30am, some out-of-town units were being released as other firefighters remain at the scene dousing hotspots.
