RINGTOWN – A project years in the making came to fruition in the valley this weekend.

Several dozen people braved the chilly and windy weather Saturday morning to cut the ribbon on the new Ringtown Library Storywalk at the Union Township walking trail adjacent to the township building.

Tanya Savitsky, the library’s director, said constructing the Storywalk had been a dream since she’d first heard about the concept.

With grant funding from the Schuylkill Area Community Foundation, she launched a mobile, temporary effort with lawn signs. Those weren’t weather resistant.

“I’ve always wished for a permanent Storywalk, but we had nowhere to put it,” Savitsky said.

As the township’s walking trail gained traction, so did the idea of a permanent fixture.

Lining the half-mile trail are around 20 fixtures, each with a portion of a story.

Fittingly, the current story is Eclipse by Andy Rash.

Each fixture is sponsored by a local family or business, and many are in memory of someone. Many of those donors were present at the ribbon cutting, as were current and former Union Township supervisors and the library board.

The Storywalk concept was first developed by Anne Ferguson in Vermont, with the help of Rachel Senechal of the Kellogg-Hubbard Library.
