Rhode Island man accused of swiping TVs from Hometown Walmart, attempting same at Hazle Twp.
HOMETOWN – A Rhode Island man is facing retail theft charges, accused of stealing two televisions from the Walmart here, and trying to steal two more near Hazleton.
Atahualpa Santana-Martinez, 28, of Providence, is facing two counts of misdemeanor retail theft — one in Schuylkill County and one in Luzerne County — for the incidents.
State Police at Frackville said Tuesday that troopers were called to the Hometown Walmart on August 11 for a report of a retail theft.
Troopers said Santana-Martinez had placed two TVs, worth $516, into his shopping cart and walked out of the store without paying.
He was later arrested by State Police at Hazleton trying to do the same at the Hazle Township Walmart.
Santana-Martinez was committed to Luzerne County Prison, unable to post $50,000 cash bail.
A preliminary hearing is set for Thursday at 10am in Luzerne County Central Court on the Hazle Township charge, and on Sept. 26 at 10am at Magisterial District Judge Stephen Bayer’s Tamaqua courtroom for the Hometown charge.
