Residents give W. Mahanoy Nature Trail sign new life

KAYLEE LINDENMUTH / SHENANDOAH SENTINEL - The West Mahanoy Township Nature Trail along Raven Run Road has a new sign. Pictured after its installation on May 19, 2023 are, from L-R, Heather and Tony Kankowski, and Township Supervisors Paul "Pepper" Martin and Michael Kayes.

SHENANDOAH HEIGHTS – Atop Locust Mountain along Raven Run Road is a little-known trail that once served as a vital link between Ringtown and Shenandoah.

The West Mahanoy Township Nature Trail, which is actually a quarter mile into Union Township, follows the abandoned stretch of the original road connecting the valley to town, which was replaced in the 1930s by the current Ringtown Boulevard.

For years, the only marker of the trail was a wooden sign posted at the entrance, a sign which had fallen into disrepair.

Friday morning, a Heather and Tony Kankowski, who live a few miles down the road on Raven Run Road, replaced the old wooden sign with a new, more visible sign.

The Kankowskis said they hope more people will use the trail, which descends the mountain into Pattersonville.

The new sign was a family project for them, with their son, Aaron Sharp, helping out.
