PUC cuts Pa. American Water rate increase in half

FRACKVILLE – Water customers in Frackville won’t see their rates go up nearly as much as expected.

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) approved Thursday a motion to slash Pennsylvania American Water’s proposed rate increase in half.

The private water company serves a large statewide footprint and serves the Frackville area in our area.

They were originally asking for a 20% increase, bringing in an additional $202.4 Million.

The PUC’s move Thursday cut the rate increase in half, to 9.99% or an additional $99.3 Million in revenue.

“Today, I believe that the Commission struck a balance by approving a significantly lower increase than requested while expanding customer benefits and access to the company’s various consumer assistance programs,” said Chairman Stephen DeFrank.  “Additionally, the Commission’s action today enables cumulative quality of service issues raised in this proceeding to be properly addressed.”

The move also directs Pennsylvania American Water to file revised tarriffs, with the effective date on or after August 7.

Once filed with the Commission, the updated tariff filings will contain the exact water and wastewater rates and overall projected impact on customers’ monthly bills in each of the Company’s rate zones.
