Public meeting scheduled Wednesday night for planned PPL transmission line

SUGARLOAF – PPL Electric Utilities is planning to build 12 miles of high-voltage lines from the Humboldt Industrial Park north to Nescopeck — through the Conyngham Valley — and an informational open house will be held Wednesday.

Construction is expected to start next Spring, though community opposition is growing against the project via a group by the name of Alliance to Stop The Line.

According to PPL, the project will be built through Hazle, Black Creek, Sugarloaf, and Nescopeck townships, along with two new switchyards near Nescopeck and Tomhicken.

The Allentown-based utility says the “new facilities and transmission lines are needed to provide additional power to the area to support future load growth, including a new customer facility.”

It follows an existing transmission line, though that line utilizes traditional “telephone poles.” The new line will use larger steel structures and the right-of-way will be expanded from 100 feet to 200 feet either by property purchase or eminent domain.

Sugarloaf Township Supervisors recently approved a resolution opposing the project, as well.

A public open house is set for Wednesday night from 6pm to 8pm at the Valley Country Club, 79 Country Club Lane, Sugarloaf.
