PSP: Shenandoah man flees trooper, nearly strikes car

GILBERTON – A Shenandoah man is facing a misdemeanor fleeing charge after police say he passed a state trooper at nearly 80 miles per hour and fled, running multiple stop signs and nearly striking another car.

Timothy J. Romanczuk, 20, of West Oak Street, was charged last week with misdemeanor fleeing a police officer and multiple traffic violations.

According to the criminal complaint filed by Trooper Shane Clark, Clark was monitoring traffic on the Gold Star Highway in Gilberton around 4:45pm when a white Kia drove by at 78 miles per hour.

The Gold Star is a 55 mile per hour zone from Frackville to the Gold Star Plaza.

As the trooper entered the highway with lights activated, Clark said the Kia increased speed.

The Kia nearly struck an SUV on Catawissa Street in Frackville and ran a stop sign at Catawissa and Balliet, at Balliet and Spring, and at Spring and Nice before yielding to a traffic stop on Spring Street near Center Street.

Romanczuk was taken into custody for failing to stop for the trooper and read his Miranda rights. He declined to speak to the trooper.

A preliminary hearing is set for Feb. 12 before Magisterial District Judge Edward Tarantelli.
