PSP: Man wanted for cutting down utility pole to swipe transformers ran, hid in shed

TRENTON – A man accused of cutting down a utility pole in an attempt to steal power transformers is in custody and facing new charges.

Gavyn Datchko, 21, of 134 Railroad Street, Delano, was arraigned Thursday on outstanding felony charges and a new felony flight charge.

Datchko was wanted after State Police at Frackville said he and Chelsea Lorady, 33, of Park Place, downed a utility pole at Carbonite Filter in Delano and took two of the three transformers that were on the pole.

The act knocked out power for Delano.

Lorady is out on unsecured bail of June 6. Her charges were waived for Schuylkill County Court on Wednesday.

According to a criminal complaint filed Thursday by Trooper Matthew Hoke, troopers were called to a home at 83 Trenton Road on a tip that Datchko may be there.

When troopers arrived, they walked toward a wooded area behind a garage and saw Datchko flee the garage. A foot chase ensued and additional troopers arrived to assist as Datchko hid in a shed.

He ignored multiple orders to surrender, troopers said, and resisted arrest when Hoke and others attempted to take him into custody.

Datchko is now facing felony flight to avoid apprehension, misdemeanor resisting arrest, and misdemeanor evading arrest. He is also facing felony charges of disruption of service, risking catastrophe, theft by unlawful taking, receiving stolen property, and criminal mischief.

He was arraigned and committed to Schuylkill County Prison, unable to post $50,000 bail. A preliminary hearing is set for July 3.
