HAZLE TOWNSHIP – A Weatherly man used a handheld radio to contact an air medical helicopter and asked for a ride to Florida, state troopers said.

Stephen Hinkle, 48, of Weatherly, is facing misdemeanor charges of false alarm to a public safety agency and possession of a controlled substance.

According to State Police at Hazleton, troopers were called to the Hazleton Regional Airport around 9pm March 2.

Troopers received a report of a man contacting an air medical helicopter trying to hitch a ride to Florida.

The man, later identified as Hinkle, was using a handheld radio to contact the chopper. He refused to tell the pilot why he wanted to go to Florida or provide any information.

He was arraigned Wednesday by Magisterial District Judge James Dixon and released on $15,000 unsecured bail.
