PSP: Man disregarded crosswalk signal, hit by car at Main and Centre

SHENANDOAH – A Shenandoah man suffered minor injuries and will be cited after state police say he ignored the steady orange pedestrian signal and crossed Main Street anyways before being struck by a turning vehicle.

State Police at Frackville said the incident happened around 7am Monday when Juan Carlos Viveros Perez, 26, of Shenandoah, crossed North Main Street.

Troopers said the pedestrian signal controlling the crosswalk there was a steady orange hand, meaning he could not cross the street.

He did, and was struck by a 2019 Chevrolet, driven by Edward Balkiewicz, 55, of Ringtown, who was turning from West Centre onto North Main.

Viveros Perez was taken to a Pottsville hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Balkiewicz was not injured and his vehicle was driven from the scene.

Viveros Perez will be cited for disregarding the pedestrian signal.
