PSP: Brandonville man threatened to shoot East Union supervisor, husband

SHEPPTON – A Brandonville man is facing charges for a threat that led to the postponement of the monthly East Union Township Supervisors meeting last week.

Dennis J. Conti, 72, of 143 Main Boulevard, was charged with terroristic threats and harassment charges by Trooper Justin Funk for the incident last Wednesday.

According to the criminal complaint filed in Magisterial District Judge Anthony Kilker’s Shenandoah courtroom, troopers were called to the East Union Township Municipal Building in Sheppton around 1:30pm Wednesday.

Troopers said Jill Careyva, supervisors chairwoman, said Conti had approached her and began complaining about farmers polluting fields near his residence. Conti, Careyva told troopers, was irate and yelling and, at one point, said “if I see Ed [Careyva’s husband] spraying the fields when me or my grandchildren are in the yard, I am going to get a gun and shoot him in his seat.”

Jill Careyva then noted that Conti had threatened to find and shoot her instead, while pointing his finger in her face. That threat led to the cancellation of Thursday’s township meeting.

According to the Schuylkill County Parcel Locator, the majority of the agricultural fields in Brandonville — including behind and across the street from Conti’s home — are owned by Ed Careyva.

Troopers said the altercation was heard by the township secretary as well.

When troopers interviewed Conti at his home, Conti denied having threatened the supervisor.

Conti will have to appear before Kilker on June 29 in Shenandoah.
