UPDATE: PSP identifies victim of officer-involved shooting, says borough police fired single shot
SHENANDOAH – State Police have identified the man who they say lunged at a Shenandoah police officer, who then fired one shot, killing the man.
The incident happened around 12:30am at 309 West Coal Street.
State Police at Frackville said Shenandoah and Mahanoy City Police were called to that home for a burglary in progress.
The vacant home has video surveillance, and the property owner saw someone in the house with a mask and a big knife, prompting him to call 911.
Police cleared the residence and found a man, identified as 32-year-old Byron Scheuring, of Shenandoah, under a bed upstairs.
They said he was given multiple commands to surrender and refused.
When officers began moving the bed he was under, Scheuring lunged at them while holding what they described as a machete.
A Shenandoah police officer fired a single shot, striking Scheuring.
The officers rendered aid and called EMS, to no avail. Scheuring was pronounced dead at the scene by the Schuylkill County Coroner’s Office.
The officers were not injured.
Law enforcement spent much of the morning at the scene investigating, including a State Police Forensic Services Unit.
At least a dozen police cars were at the scene around 4am and Coal Street was closed from West to Gilbert.
The investigation is ongoing and the Schuylkill County District Attorney’s Office is involved.
