PSP: Berwick man led police on foot chase through woods into Girard Park
SHENANDOAH – A Berwick man is in county prison, accused of providing a false name to law enforcement and taking off into the Girard Park woodlands.
Terry Andino, 27, of 234 Martzville Road, is facing misdemeanor charges of flight, resisting arrest, tampering with evidence, evading arrest, and false identification.
Charges were filed Friday by West Mahanoy Township Patrolman Mark Hysock.
According to court documents, Hysock was on patrol in the area of the Heights intersection on Route 924 when he saw a man later identified as Andino drive past on a mini-bike.
Hysock provided the bike the opportunity to pull off onto an ATV path and, when he didn’t, a traffic stop was initiated.
Andino initially provided a false name and date of birth, claiming to be about 10 years younger than he was.
Hysock warned the man that if he did not provide his real name, he would be charged with false identification. Andino did, and Hysock returned to his car to run the information.
Patrolman Theodore Buriak Jr. arrived and shortly after, Andino attempted to restart the mini-bike and was directed to stop, Hysock wrote.
Andino didn’t. He successfully restarted the bike and attempted to flee, at which point Buriak tackled him off the bike.
Andino escaped the patrolman and ran down the Heights hill into the woodlands above Girard Park while Hysock gave chase.
In the pursuit through the woods, Hysock deployed a taser device to no avail.
The two fell down an embankment, suffering injuries, and the chase continued into the park where Shenandoah Borough Police were waiting and Andino was taken into custody.
While still in the woods, Andino, Hysock said, tossed a bookbag.
Hysock suffered cuts to both arms and a bruised thigh, while Andino had scrapes to his knees and legs. Buriak had an injured left knee after the tackle.
All three were evaluated at the scene by EMS.
Andino, Hysock wrote, was wanted by Columbia County Probation and told police that he knew, which is why he gave a fake name and ran.
Andino was taken to Schuylkill County Prison and transferred to Columbia County.
A preliminary hearing is set for July 11 in Shenandoah.
