Police: Woman set duffel bag aflame against Mahanoy building
MAHANOY CITY – A Mahanoy City woman is facing felony arson charges after police say she torched a duffel bag near a building earlier this month.
Chanily Ferran Navedo, 34, of East Pine Street, was arrested Wednesday on felony arson, risking a catastrophe, and dangerous burning charges.
According to the criminal complaint filed by Patrolman Rachael Lenar, police officers discovered a duffel bag aflame against a building on Sept. 2 just before 2am.
A fire engine from the Humane Fire Company was able to extinguish the fire before it spread to the building.
Surveillance video captured the incident, showing a woman dragging the duffel bag to the area of the fire and then walking away from the now-flaming bag.
She was identified as Ferran Navedo earlier this week and taken into custody.
She was arraigned Wednesday and briefly committed to Schuylkill County Prison on $25,000 bail.
That bail was posted Thursday by a Palmerton bail bondsman and she was released.
A preliminary hearing is set for Sept. 26.
