Police: Maryland man assaulted cop, two nurses at Mahanoy rehab center
MAHANOY CITY – A man from suburban Baltimore is facing felony charges, accused of assaulting two nurses and a police officer at the Silver Pines Treatment Center just outside Mahanoy City Wednesday afternoon.
Matthew Edward Calloway, 36, of Ellicott City, Maryland, is facing felony aggravated assault , misdemeanor simple assault, and summary harassment charges for the incident.
According to court documents filed at Magisterial District Judge Anthony Kilker’s office, police were called to the center on White Owl Drive around 12:30pm for a disturbance.
In his criminal complaint charging Calloway, Mahanoy Township Police Chief Brandon Alexander said he was notified upon arrival that Calloway had attacked two staff members and was still in an altercation with other staff members.
Alexander entered the room where the struggle was occurring, finding two staff members struggling with Calloway on the ground.
He then took Calloway into custody, placing him in a patrol car for safety.
Amanda Gray, a nurse at the facility, told Alexander that she and Karen Krause, another nurse, attempted to get vital signs from Calloway, at which point he punched Gray in the face, to the point she said she “blacked out for a few seconds.” When Gray woke up, she told Alexander, she ran into the bathroom and locked the door.
Krause told police she tried to intervene, at which point Calloway began attacking her.
While Alexander interviewed the nurses, a Mahanoy City Police officer, Matthew Williams, was watching Calloway.
Calloway asked that officer to adjust his handcuffs and, when Williams leaned over to oblige, Calloway head-butted him.
Gray and Krause were taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries, according to the criminal complaint.
Calloway was arraigned yesterday by Kilker and committed to Schuylkill County Prison, unable to post $100,000 bail.
