Police Log, 10/21/2024

NORTHERN SCHUYLKILL – The following is a collection of police incidents reported by local law enforcement agencies in our region.

Vehicle Accident

HUMBOLDT – No injuries were reported when a tractor trailer cut across Route 924 here, causing a crash.

State Police at Hazleton said the crash happened on Oct. 8 around 6:30pm at Route 924 and I-81.

Shivinder Kaushal, 28, of Brampton, Ontario, was driving a 2000 Kenworth truck as Darline Lora, 31, of West Hazleton, was driving a 2011 Subaru Impreza.

Troopers said Kaushal was in the turn lane waiting to turn onto I-81 North as Lora was headed south on Route 924.

The light turned yellow and Kaushal began his turn, cutting across Lora’s path and causing a collision.

Neither were injured, though Lora’s vehicle was disabled and towed.

Troopers said citations against Kaushal are pending investigation.

Vehicle Accident

BARRY TOWNSHIP – A Lebanon woman was seriously injured in a crash along Route 901 here.

The crash happened around 3:30pm Oct. 9 on Sunbury Road near Deep Creek Road.

Troopers said Sierra Wertz, 27, of Lebanon, was headed north in a 2016 Jeep Cherokee and the vehicle left the lane, struck a guiderail on the opposite side of the highway came to a rest on the shoulder.

Wertz was not wearing a seatbelt, troopers said, and was flown to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville.

Theft

PITMAN – Someone stole $600 worth of meat in the middle of the night at a farm stand in Eldred Township.

The theft happened around 2:30am Oct. 16 at Masser’s Produce and Farm, 1186 Vista Road.

Drug Possession

SHENANDOAH – A Shenandoah Valley High School student is facing charges after district police say she brought a marijuana vape pen to school and hit it in the bathroom.

Deiry Altagracia De Leon Gonzalez, 18, of Shenandoah, was charged Oct. 11 with misdemeanor drug possession and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.

According to the criminal complaint filed by Shenandoah Valley School District Police Officer John Hancock, the vape alarm in the girls first floor high school bathroom went off around 11am Oct. 2.

School administrators reviewed surveillance footage and determined only one person was in the bathroom at the time: De Leon Gonzalez. She was interviewed by administrators and was asked if she was in possession of anything she wasn’t supposed to have. She produced a vape from her purse and handed it to an administrator, which administrators said had a strong odor of marijuana.

The oil substance within tested positive for marijuana.

Charges were filed Oct. 11 and a preliminary hearing is set for Nov. 21.

Unauthorized School Bus Entry

GIRARDVILLE – A Girardville man is facing charges after police say he yelled at a school bus driver and stepped foot on the bus, preventing the driver from shutting the doors.

Dequanta Adams, 28, of West Main Street, was charged Oct. 11 with misdemeanor terroristic threats, unauthorized school bus entry, and summary disorderly conduct.

According to the criminal complaint filed by Butler Township Police Patrolman John Minalda, the incident happened around 3pm Oct. 4 at John and Main Streets in Girardville.

A North Schuylkill school bus was letting kids off and, after the last kid got off, Adams confronted the bus driver and asked if she knew what was happening on her bus. He put his foot on the front step, stopping the driver from shutting the door, saying he was going to be heard.

He was told he was not allowed on the bus and told to remove his foot and refused. He said that if any high school kids had an issue with his child, he would “f— them up,” according to the complaint.

Later that night, two Safe 2 Say complaints were lodged about the incident and threats made by Adams.

Minalda and a Rohrer Bus supervisor reviewed footage of the incident captured by cameras on the bus.

School administrators also interviewed the two students who filed Safe 2 Say complaints.

A preliminary hearing is set for Nov. 20 before Magisterial District Judge Edward Tarantelli in Frackville.

Theft

PARDEESVILLE – State troopers are investigating the theft of a bicycle near Hazleton.

The theft happened on Oct. 10 at a home on Center Street in Pardeesville, Hazle Township, according to State Police a Hazleton.

The bike was valued at $200.

Stolen Vehicle

HAZLE TOWNSHIP – State Police at Hazleton are investigating after a stolen vehicle was found at an abandoned home near Hazleton.

Troopers said the car was discovered around 2:45pm Sept. 22 at a home at 872 Stockton Mountain Road.

Troopers said the vehicle had a Massachusetts plate and was registered to a trust in Florida. Multiple VIN numbers were either covered or destroyed, and the vehicle was reported stolen out of Nassau County.

Hit-and-Run

HUMBOLDT – State troopers are investigating a hit-and-run crash on Route 924 near the Humboldt Industrial Park.

The crash happened around 8pm Oct. 12.

Troopers said a black Acura side-swiped a 2011 Dodge Avenger driven by Michael Phillips, 27, of McAdoo, as the Acura was passing in the left lane.

Phillips was not injured and the Acura fled the scene.

Use of Explosive

WAYNE TOWNSHIP – State troopers are investigating after they say someone set off tannerite for a gender reveal.

It happened around 5pm Oct. 5 at a home on Long Run Road.

Troopers said numerous neighbors reported an explosion and said it had caused damage to their homes.

The explosion’s cause, they said, was tannerite detonated for a gender reveal party.

Troopers are investigating.

Burglary

PORT CARBON – An ATV and tools were swiped from a locked shed here earlier this month, and troopers are seeking whoever did it.

The burglary happened overnight Oct. 7 to Oct. 8 at a home on Pottsville Street in Port Carbon.

Troopers said someone broke into a locked shed and stole a Honda ATV and Milwaukee tools.
