GILBERTON – Firefighters from several area communities spent Thursday morning pumping water from Railroad Street, a relatively common occurrence with significant rainfall in the past few years.

The call came just before 8:00am for firefighters from Fire District 44, Gilberton, assisted by Mahanoy City, Girardville Shenandoah Heights, and Saint Clair firefighters to pump water from the roadway.

Mahanoy City’s Citizens’ engine set up on Purnell Avenue between Main and Railroad, feeding Girardville’s Rangers’ engine, parked at the Route 924 overpass pumping water across the bridge construction site to the Mahanoy Creek.

Saint Clair’s West End Fire Company and the Shenandoah Heights Fire Company joined the Rangers later on.

Flooding covered most of Railroad Street in up to three feet of water at its deepest points. The flood waters stretched about four blocks, stretching up Coal Street nearly to Main Street.

At the time of publication, firefighters remain at the scene.

This marks at least the second time Gilberton has dealt with flooding so far this year, the first occurring on May 1.
