Over 150 runners compete in 42nd Coal Cracker 10k race
SHENANDOAH – It took just about 35 minutes for the fastest runner of over 150 to traverse the hills of the Shenandoah and Mahanoy valleys in one of the most challenging footraces in eastern Pennsylvania.
The 42nd running of the Coal Cracker 10k was Saturday morning.
Beginning at Centre and Market Streets, 153 racers ran down South Main Street, up the Gold Star, through Gilberton, and back into town via Route 54 at Saint Nicholas.
Matthew Santacoloma won his third straight, returning to downtown Shenandoah in just 35:06.
The 22-year-old from the Lehigh Valley bested his previous winning times by nearly 40 seconds.
Robert Espinal came second, about 10 seconds behind with a time of 35:17. The 17-year-old was first in the male 19 and under age group.
Rounding out the podium was Colby Petrizzo, 21, at 37:31.
