One injured, five displaced after southside culinary incident
SHENANDOAH – One person was taken to a hospital after they were found unresponsive in a smoke-filled home on the southside Tuesday evening.
Firefighters were called to a double-block home at 318 West Poplar Street just before 10pm for a reported house fire.
Shenandoah Fire Chief Rick Examitas told the Sentinel the department was called when smoke began filling the residence, coming from the lower level of the home in a living area below the Poplar Street grade.
He said a resident was found there unresponsive and was rescued from the home and taken to a local hospital for treatment.
The smoke was caused by a culinary incident and minimal damage was reported.
Five residents are displaced from the home after an electrical issue was found in the home and the adjoining vacant home at 320 West Poplar. PPL Electric Utilities was called to the scene and the meters for both homes were pulled.
The displaced residents are being assisted by their landlord, Examitas said.
Firefighters from Shenandoah’s five fire companies responded along with Frackville and Mahanoy City’s West End fire company. Shenandoah Ambulance and Shenandoah Police also responded.
