One dead, two flown after Gold Star crash

UPDATE 2:57pm – The Gold Star Highway has reopened
GILBERTON – One person was killed, and two others taken by helicopter to local hospitals after a crash on the Gold Star Highway near Gilberton Wednesday afternoon.
The crash happened around 12:30pm, when a Honda Accord heading towards Frackville lost control near the rock wall area of the highway, and was struck broadside by a Buick SUV.
Firefighters from Gilberton and Mahanoy City responded to the scene, while Frackville fire police closed the road at their side.
The driver of the Honda was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in the Honda, as well as the driver of the Buick, were taken to awaiting medical helicopters in Shenandoah, where they were flown to local hospitals.
As of 2:20pm, the Gold Star Highway remained closed.
The Schuylkill Transportation System adjusted its Shenandoah route as a result of the crash. Stops on Lehigh at Frack and Spring in Frackville, and at Gold Star Plaza, Burger King, and Main and Oak in Shenandoah were suspended until further notice.
