On Veterans Day, Shenandoah Valley honors those who served

SHENANDOAH – Monday morning, the Shenandoah Valley High School paid tribute to those who served our country in the armed forces with the school’s annual Veterans Day ceremony.

At 11am, juniors and seniors gathered in the auditorium for the service organized by the Shenandoah Valley Student Council.

The Shenandoah Anthony P. Damato American Legion Post Damato Post 792 also participated in the event and its members were treated to a lunch afterward, courtesy of the student council.

American Legion 13th District Commander Harry Hause served as guest speaker.

Rich Stevens, a member of the Damato Post, recognized Shenandoah’s veterans who had passed away in the past year.

A special memorial to servicemembers missing in action was also set up. Two candles were lit by Melanie Saba and by Mr. Michael Elchisak, a social studies teacher and Navy veteran.

Johnny Burke placed a flag on an empty seat saved in memory of those missing in action.

The Shenandoah Valley Band performed “This Is My Country,” “Eternal Father Strong To Save” with the band’s county chorus qualifiers, and Taps, performed by Victoria Hernandez.
