Northern Schuylkill COG mulls future

MAHANOY CITY – The Northern Schuylkill Council of Governments discussed the organization’s future Wednesday as the organization has struggled to hold meetings.

The council of governments includes the boroughs of Shenandoah, Ashland, Mahanoy City, Frackville, Ringtown, and the townships of Butler, East Union, Ryan, Schuylkill, Union, and West Mahanoy, among others, as well as the Schuylkill County Municipal Authority.

They meet every two months, but the last meeting occurred in November due to low attendance.

Wednesday, they met for the first time in 2025 at Mahanoy City Borough Hall.

“This organization is an organization that can help taxpayers out and communities and work well and save a lot of money if you have people who want to participate and work towards it,” Clyde “Champ” Holman, Ryan Township, said. “But you also have to have meetings.”

The organization’s primary benefit in recent years had been equipment sharing. They owned various pieces of equipment that a municipality may not be able to justify purchasing but may occasionally need, like a sweeper, skid steer, milling machine, and a mower.

Right now, they operate a mower and a skid steer.

Holman expressed concerns regarding the possibility of a May meeting.

Delegates at the March meeting included West Mahanoy Township, Ringtown, Ryan Township, Mahanoy City and Ashland. Shenandoah was not present.
