North Schuylkill, Hazleton win regional marching band titles
FOUNTAIN SPRINGS – Two local marching bands left Spartan Stadium as regional champions Saturday night.
North Schuylkill hosted the Tournament of Bands Regions 2 and 4 Championships one week after they hosted their annual home tournament.
Regions 2 and 4 make up northeastern and northcentral Pennsylvania and bands competing Saturday came from as far as Lewistown and Tioga County.
Spectators were treated to a wide spectrum of marching arts, from traditional field shows to those with cutting edge visuals and storytelling and everything in-between.
Local bands competing included North Schuylkill, Mahanoy Area, and Hazleton Area.
The bands competed in various divisions based on the band’s size and competition level. The Open class is considered “the traditional competitive arena for experienced groups and staff,” though they were in different divisions based on their size.
In the A class, intended for bands which are newer to the competitive space, bands performed field shows which could be considered more traditional for those who are used to high school football halftime shows.
In Region 2 Class 2-A, Mahanoy Area and Hazleton Area competed, with Hazleton winning the championship.
Three bands made up the 1-A class in Region 2 — North Schuylkill, Williams Valley, and Wyoming Area — with North Schuylkill winning the title.
Kiarelly Corcino, a Hazleton band member, was also honored with an outstanding performer award and the Tournament of Bands Region 2 Scholarship.
