Multiple rescued, one flown from Minersville row home blaze
MINERSVILLE – Firefighters from all over Schuylkill County responded to a multi-alarm blaze here where at least one person was taken to the hospital.
Flames broke out just before 1pm in the 600 block of North Second Street in the borough.
Heavy fire could be seen coming from the rear of 619-617 North Second Street as crews were en route.
Bystanders helped rescue at least two people from the burning homes, one of whom was taken to an awaiting air medical helicopter and flown to a Dauphin County hospital.
Multiple alarms were struck, and a tanker task force was requested as well, as the blaze taxed the municipal water supply.
Among the fire departments responding were Minersville, Pottsville, Mahanoy City, Englewood, Frackville, Schuylkill Haven, Pine Grove, Donaldson, Tremont, Joliett, Port Carbon, Heckschersville, Forestville, and more.
About two blocks away, some firefighters were diverted to battle a brush fire just north of Forney Street, near the First Congregational Church Cemetery. A brush truck from Saint Clair was among the units called for that fire.
At least six homes were damaged in the original fire.
The American Red Cross was on scene to assist displaced families, though it is not yet known how many people are displaced.
Some crews began clearing the scene around 3pm. As of 4pm, some crews remain on the scene.
A State Police fire marshal has been called in to investigate.
