Mt. Carmel Area reports second coronavirus case, closes school Monday
MOUNT CARMEL, Northumberland County – A second case of coronavirus in the Mount Carmel Area School District has led to a school closing tomorrow, August 31, and two days of virtual instruction for the Junior/Senior High.
District Superintendent Pete Cheddar issued a statement Sunday announcing the second case and closing.
“Due to a notification of a second COVID related (positive case) the Mount Carmel Area School District will be closed to all students and staff tomorrow, Monday, August 31st to allow for additional deep cleaning to our facilities,” Cheddar wrote. No extracurricular activities will be held tomorrow, either.
Following the closing, students in the Junior/Senior High School will receive instruction virtually on Tuesday and Wednesday. Elementary students will reopen for in-person instruction Tuesday.
“Our hope and goal is to return to full in person instruction in the Junior-Senior High School on Thursday, September 3rd,” Cheddar said.
The closing does not pertain to students attending the Northumberland County Career and Tech Center, who will have class as scheduled tomorrow.
“The PA Department of Health will be working closely with our school district to determine if any student or staff member would need to possibly quarantine as a result of this second case,” Cheddar added. “These decisions are being made in accordance with the current Pennsylvania Department of Health and Pennsylvania Department of Education Recommendations for Pre-K to 12 Schools following Identification of COVID cases.”
